The Municipality of Calape was formally established in 1802. Its name is historically linked to kalapi, a type of rattan once abundant in the area, implying that early inhabitants were likely involved in the gathering, processing, and trade of this valuable natural resource, widely used for furniture, baskets, and handicrafts. Alternatively, the name is also believed to signify a traditional gathering place for traders and fishermen.
An impressive 18th-century Gothic-inspired structure, constructed from 1933 to 1954, featuring lancet arches, rose windows, and spires. Designated a National Cultural Treasure in 2023.
